This past weekend, Charlotte was buzzing with excitement as it hosted the 2019 NBA All-Star Game. The game was broadcasted worldwide. With celebrities, NBA stars and thousands of fans in town, the City of Charlotte shined the brightest. That’s all thanks to you, Team Charlotte.

“While you provide All-Star service every day, when a major event occurs, the whole world gets to see the best in action. Your hard work, enthusiasm and commitment made this past weekend a slam-dunk success!” — City Manager Marcus D. Jones

Success at all levels

To pull off a large-scale event like this, it takes a lot of teamwork between departments and our community partners.

Many visitors’ first stop was the Charlotte Douglas International Airport where they were greeted with hospitality and a chance to shoot hoops at the pop-a-shot. As they headed to uptown, they might not have even noticed the work behind the road planning and traffic management to get to their destination or the clean water at their hotel. Even with the Charlotte Area Transit System’s transit center relocating, staff worked hard on messaging to the public and got people where they needed to go.

The streets beamed with all-star pride on every corner. Visitors complimented on how clean our city is, which is thanks to our Solid Waste Services crew who cleared 12 tons of trash over the weekend. You could spot Charlotte Department of Transportation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Charlotte Fire Department employees working around the event area.

Behind the scenes, communications, technology, operations and emergency management employees from every department worked literally around the clock to manage the event. The city manager says it best.

“Your performance and collaboration across departments and city partners showed the nation and the world that Team Charlotte is the best and most capable of handling the biggest happenings. You are the true All-Stars!” — City Manager Marcus D. Jones

Thank you, Team Charlotte!
