Google has taken another step toward dethroning OpenAI’s top position in the AI space with Gemini’s latest update. Yesterday they released their new two million token context window for their Gemini 1.5 Pro model. This release has doubled the already impressive one million token context window that users have been working with for months. As a refresher, the context window refers to the text (or data) that a model can access at any given time when responding to a user prompt. While larger context windows have been possible in the past, they often caused severe hallucinations that made the model too unreliable. Thankfully, developers at Google (and other AI companies) have worked to ensure that larger context windows no longer reduce the effectiveness of the model.

“Today, we’re opening up access to the 2 million token context window on Gemini 1.5 Pro for all developers.”- Google’s Developer Blog

How can I access this new version of Gemini 1.5 Pro?

Unfortunately, the Gemini App currently doesn’t have access to this new update. In order to utilize this massive context window, you’ll need to head to the Google AI Studio or use the Gemini API. The Google AI Studio is a powerful and easy to use environment that all Google accounts can use for free. You can learn more about how to best get started with Google AI Studio through my previous article.

Looking to the future

This latest upgrade to Gemini 1.5 Pro will have lasting impacts on both Google’s place in the AI ecosystem as well as enable users to interact with massive amounts of information. Users can now upload videos that are an hour long or more into AI Studio and be able to interact with the video. Gemini is able to “understand” the transcript, topics, and visuals for an uploaded files.

The new context window is one of several new features that Google announced this week. Check out Google’s latest blog post to learn more about everything that was discussed.
