“The Lansdowne Unlocked programme has really opened my eyes to new possibilities and now I am clearer about what direction I want my career to take. ”
Hani Ali is a second-year Economics student at SOAS and has recently completed the Lansdowne Unlocked programme, where she developed her confidence and self-awareness whilst learning the value of being yourself and doing what you are passionate about.
Why did you want to take part in the Lansdowne Unlocked programme?
I’ve been working with Arrival for a few years, so when the Lansdowne opportunity came about and ticked all the boxes I was looking for, I knew I wanted to apply. When I discovered that the programme offered CV and interview practice, mentoring and shadowing opportunities as well as an insight into the world of investment management I was really keen to take part.
I also wanted an experience outside of the academic realm and to learn more about the financial sector from a first-hand perspective. I felt the programme would give me a better sense of direction on what career path I could choose within the sector.
What do you think you gained most from the experience?
As well as developing my understanding of the investment management world, I also learnt what doing a job truly entails. Many people often look at jobs and see a 9–5 or they look at the salary they will earn, I am guilty of it myself. But the people at Lansdowne really enjoy what they do and that made me think hard about the path I’ll choose. I’ll definitely think more carefully about a company’s values and if they align with my own when looking for future opportunities.
What new skills or abilities did you develop during your time on the programme?
Definitely confidence. Being paired with such a senior member within the company and getting to know them has empowered me to speak to anyone. My mentor allowed me to feel supported when needing time to pray and I realised at the end of the day we were both human despite the difference in background and seniority. When I start my career I know I’ll have the confidence to express myself in any environment.
I also gained more confidence in myself, the programme offered me so many experiences that developed my self-awareness because I was learning from someone who had a career I was looking into.
What was the key insight you gained from your relationship with your mentor?
I gained insight into what employers are looking for and how they want to get to know you as a person. It’s important to showcase my character as well as my skills and experience. I also found out what a CEO of an investment management partnership does on a day to day basis.
How did the programme affect any future career choices you’re going to make?
I have always gravitated towards finance and investment and I have previously taken part in Arrival programmes such as Invest for Success with Investec. I have done research into the sector but never completely understood what it entailed. I gained first-hand knowledge and experience that was so much more rewarding as it’s helped me figure out if I really want a career in investment management.
This programme has opened my eyes to new possibilities, I discovered my interest in Islamic finance and now I want to explore that sector. Now, I have the confidence and self-belief to approach companies within the Islamic finance industry to gain more experience and understanding.
What would you say if you were recommending the Lansdowne programme to a friend? And what are your experiences of Lansdowne as an organisation?
I would definitely recommend this experience to everyone who is interested. You’ll gain so much on a conscious and subconscious level. I am clear about my future career path and I’ve also gained the confidence to pursue it!
“Every experience and opportunity you receive is what you choose to make it so, grab it and make the most of it.”
Even if you are not interested in investment management, you will gain insights, build great relationships and get a better picture of what you want your future to look like.
And how was your experience of the team at Arrival?
The Arrival team were really good, they were very supportive, sending emails to make sure I understood everything, offering directions to all of the venues and even offering to pay travel expenses for those who may have struggled. I really hope Lansdowne will do more programmes like this so other young people like me get to experience the benefits of the programme because it really has helped me so much.
