The King Kosoko Royal Family of Lagos will mark the 163rd anniversary of the return of the late Oba and Oloja of Lagos with a week-long programme, starting on 8 September with a memorial lecture (at Glover Hall, Marina) and ending with a grand finale on 16 September (at the King Kosoko Palace, Ereko).

One of the key activities of the celebrations is the road walk and lighting “arrival light”, scheduled for the Kosoko palace premises on 15th September, at 8pm.

“The Return 1862 commemorates the historic return of King Kosoko and his followers to Lagos in 1862. Says Prince Abiola Kosoko, the Oloja–elect of Lagos, while addressing a press conference in Lagos last August. “This return resulted in the founding of the Epetedo settlement and the Ereko palace establishment.”

The Glover Hall event will feature a book launch and anthem unveiling. An interdenominational traditional prayer is scheduled for 18 September, while a commemorative Jumat Prayer will be held on 20th September at the Lagos Central Mosque. There’ll be a thanksgiving service at the Ereko Methodist Church on 22nd September.

While stating that the family is preserving King Kosoko’s legacy with the celebration, Prince Kosoko also added that the commemoration of the historic return has been used to foster unity, create awareness, and promote tourism.

“The Return 1862 is a celebration of our rich cultural heritage and a tribute to the legacy of King Kosoko and his followers, who played a significant role in shaping the history of Lagos. This event aims to promote cultural awareness, unity, and tourism while showcasing the traditions and customs of the Lagos people. The Return 1862 has always been the only event that brings the indigenous people of Lagos from all the five divisions of Lagos to one spot”, he said.

“The Return 1862 is a celebration and an opportunity to reflect on our past, appreciate our present, and shape our future. We believe this event will foster unity, promote cultural exchange, and contribute to the economic development of Lagos.”
