Immortal Love: Félix González-Torres
Félix González-Torres is a Cuban-born American artist who rose to prominence in the 1980s through a conceptual art collective called Group Material.
The word that centers his world of art is “love”.
González-Torres, who was a member of the LGBTQ community, began to express his longing for Ross, his lover, through his art upon losing his partner.
This work, called Perfect Lovers, begins with two clocks reset with fresh batteries and starts at the same set time as the opening of an exhibition.
Even though they started at the same time, due to the mechanisms of an analog watch, the point at which the clocks’ batteries run out is different. One of the clocks will stop while the other will continue to run longer.
The artist’s emotions upon departing with a loved one are projected in this piece. The paradoxical title of Perfect Lovers also perfectly captures the situation and adds to the sadness of losing the perfect half.
“Portrait of Ross in LA”, a work created in 1991, always maintains Ross’s weight of 79.3 kg (175 lbs) before his death.
Visitors can take candies freely, but the next day, the number of candies is restored.
The candy melts in the mouth and the clock runs out eventually. And these are the workings of nature and not ones that humans can change.
González-Torres wanted to immortalize the finite nature of love.
