Drawing your first few objects
Art Basics 102
Drawing your first few objects! This might sound intimidating, especially if you are holding the pencil for the first time (not literally) or after a significantly long time. At this point, when you have already decided to step into this fantastic journey, the only thing you should feel is excitement.
Before you go ahead, do check out my previous article of the Art Basics series.
Before drawing a real object, it’s essential to do some warmup by practicing the basic shapes and patterns like this –
Once you are done with spending a considerable amount of time creating shapes and patterns, it’s time to draw your first object. As a first-timer, it’s kind of difficult to decide your especially when you aren’t very sure of your capabilities and skills. And most importantly, selecting the subject, the reference picture/pose, etc., are skills in themselves, and artists spend hours finalizing the ‘right’ ones from a myriad of options.
Now, let me help you decide your first reference picture or subject.
Pro Tip 1 — Start with a square object which has a definite shape (e.g., bottle, cup, chair, table)
To start with, pick a tangible object rather than a photo. So, what do you see around you?
I see a bottle of sanitizer! Not surprising, right? ☹
This is how it looks
And this is the front view.
Pro Tip 2 — Front view, top view, Side view are the simplest to start with as they can be easily visualized in 2D.
Now, let’s visualize this object by breaking it down into simple shapes. Something like this –
Then, let’s get them on paper one by one.
Now, let’s try to draw a bit more complex object from a slightly different angle
Breaking it down into geometrical shapes –
Getting them on paper
Now, you can apply some colors transparently over both drawings. I would suggest the use of pencil colors. Apply less pressure on the pencils and try to control them to get an even and consistent shade.
That’s it! Your first drawings are done!
Similarly, this entire week, pick one object every day and draw them. And do not forget to share them on Instagram tagging me @ipsitasartstudio
That’s all for this week!
