Going from college to a career has always been hard, but in the past few years, college graduates’ wages have been rising steadily and in 2019, graduating seniors received an average of 1.1 job offers — the highest it has been in 12 years. This doesn’t entirely mean that getting a job as a college graduate is easier though as from 2000 to 2018 steady unemployment and underemployment increase has been seen and from 2014 to 2018 they had more difficulty finding successful internships and got less offers than previous years. With the hiring market up in arms, the journey to your dream job starts long before graduation.

Choosing a path really starts with picking a college that teaches things that companies are looking for. 4 out of every 5 employers want hires with a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences. The vast majority of employers also agree that soft skills are more important than majors. But job availability also influences majors as 88% of 2017 high school graduates considered job availability before selecting a major.

Find out how to get started selecting a good college for your choice in a job and how to stand out from other hires here.
