Even for an author, it starts with why

Writing a novel is a huge undertaking. If you have never written a novel before and are just setting out on this road then you have no idea how this will take over your life.

  • You will think about your book every day
  • You will empathise with your characters as though they are real
  • You will want to talk to as many people as possible about it
  • You will work towards your target relentlessly

At least, that is the ambition. But all of this doesn’t come easily to every author every time. The whole process must start with your ‘why.’

In the words of Simon Sinek -

It doesn’t matter what you do, it matters WHY you do it.

He wrote the book in terms of explaining the success of businesses, but it also applies to the success of authors.

What is your why?

If your why is related to catching the latest trend or selling books because you want the money, then this can show through in your work.

If your why is about telling a story you feel the world ought to know, then this shines through too. And with very different results.

You shouldn’t write a book without authenticity. It will show through in every word, every sentence, every paragraph, every page.

The authentic story is what causes people to share your book when they have read it. It is what inspires people to find out more. It is what drives action. Think about the story you want to tell and you will have that burning desire to complete. It will inspire you to write more, talk to people about it all the time and help you create a story, setting and characters that feel real and inspiring too.

My latest novel InitiAl is put now and is the story of how sections of British society sit at this moment in time, told through the story of a serial killer and a team of detectives. Check it out now.
