Consumer’s attention has become the world’s most valuable commodity. Social media, gaming, and streaming sites are all designed to hold our attention and keep us from looking away. And while it’s easy to lose hours each day to web browsing and social media, about 90% of people who enroll in massive open online courses drop out within 2 weeks.

Technology may promise to make us healthier, with everything from mediation apps to yoga videos, but our attention is divided and we rarely get the results we expect. Here are some ways technology can be used effectively to promote wellness:

Gamification uses element of gaming to attract users and keep their attention. Features like tracking your progress and competing with others through leaderboards, and using virtual and augmented reality platforms for a more engaging experience can help keep people coming back for more.

Incentives have been shown to increase healthy behaviors. When people are paid or given other immediate rewards for their participation, they’re more likely to keep coming back. Incentives can also be used to reward people for keeping on track and reaching their goals.
