How we got 2,000 visitors per day for free.
About a few months ago we started seeing a lot of referral traffic from the United States to our website kien.io from the referrer msn.com. Some days a few visitors, some days close to 2,000.
Now, how did we get all this traffic? Well, that’s a good question. We’re sorry to disappoint you, but we don’t know the answer ourselves. We, however, have a funny story to tell you.
After reading a few articles about weird data in Google Analytics, we thought at first that those visits were coming from spam bots, and that we had to filter out those spammy sessions. But when looking at the visitor activity on our website, it appeared that these visitors were not spam, but real human beings behind their computers.
We couldn’t figure out what was going on, so we left the issue aside.
It’s only until a few days ago that we figured out what is happening, after receiving the message below from our website’s contact form:
What? An MSN ad? Which MSN ad?! Our company is only running Facebook ads so there was no way that this ad was from us. We immediately replied to this message:
And got the following answer:
Below is a zoom of the ad:
Well, how crazy is this. This ad has not been designed by anyone at kien, and it is actually a combination of old elements from our brand: an old logo, old colors, an old tagline, and an old product shot.
We immediately looked at our Google Adwords account to see if we didn’t have an ad running there, but no, as we expected, all advertisement is paused on that platform.
So what now?
We are asking ourselves, did someone design this ad and is paying for all the traffic, or is this a glitch in the system?
Is it worth investigating? On the one hand, this ad is bringing traffic to our website and even sales. On the other hand, we would really like to find out why this is happening!
What would you do? Tell us in the comments below!
