Behind the scenes of a perfume legend. “One Million by Paco Rabanne” (detail) by Meg Konovska

This is piece No 19 of the “33” watercolour series by Meg Konovska (*khu-khum*, that would be… ME!).

The series consists of 33 paintings, 33 x 33 cm each. They are all created in the following manner:
• Randomly make 33 dots on the blank sheet, with eyes closed
Connect the dots in a complete contour, without intersecting lines
• The resulting silhouette is developed in a sketch which is completed in colour.

To top it off, each painting is accompanied by an explanation for the unsuspecting observer to consider.

I now give you

One Million by Paco Rabanne (sold out)

Painting 33x33 cm watercolour on 50% cotton acid free paper, 250 gsm. Overall size with framing: 44x44 cm. Mounted behind glass with wooden frame.

You might have heard of one of the most emblematic perfumes by the famous designer Paco Rabanne — 1 Million. You might be surprised that the inspiration for this scent came from the designer’s encounter with whirling dervishes.

1 Million by Paco Rabanne. Used for illustration purposes only.

He once had a fashion show in Turkey where he was invited to the house of a whirling dervish. As a man of manners with a feeling for fashion, Paco brought one of his spring collection hats as a present. Mehmed (this was the dervish’s name) was so delighted that he instantly tossed away the traditional dervish hat and put the Paco Rabanne hat instead. He started whirling with enthusiasm so vigorously that he managed one million spins in just 11 minutes.

Here, at a very high speed, is captured the frame of Mehmed making his phenomenal 1 millionth spin.

Paco Rabanne was extremely impressed and he created his perfume with the allusion of ladies smelling the scent would also make them whirl with enthusiasm around the gentleman wearing it.

After the perfume development, Paco Rabanne sent a complimentary bottle to his friend Mehmed who got so addicted to it that he ordered a whole cardboard box. As a result he started using the perfume as doping to attain his stunning results which made him famous in all of Turkey.

However, in one competition Mehmed’s secret was revealed and he was excluded from the Whirling dervishes community, after being taken away all of his perfume alongside his right to practice.

But as it often happens in life, some of the most unfortunate events put us on the road to greatest success… Heartbroken, Mehmed called in tears Paco Rabanne and he shared of his pain.

The compassionate designer could not just dismiss the sorrow of the young man. Mehmed was appointed as a quality control expert for Paco Rabanne’s 1 Million perfume factories and thus his glorious career began.

Since Mehmed is already a man of age and he needs to take it easy, today the quality of each and every bottle of perfume is confirmed by having the ex-dervish smell it and aim for making one million spins in 33 minutes maximum.
