Despite the growing demand for data engineers in organizations, many in this field may find themselves facing challenges in the job market.
Throughout the years, I’ve interacted with numerous individuals in the data field, and I’ve noticed shared characteristics among them. Both for the successful and the unsuccessful, the intersection lies in curiosity and the willingness to level up.
Previously, I’ve known colleagues who opted to switch their work environments, driven by a desire to familiarize themselves with a broader range of essential tools beyond those utilized in their current company. For them, this decision significantly enhanced their professional growth and relevance in the field of data engineering. Their primary focus was on cultivating a successful career rather than solely prioritizing financial compensation.
You don’t know it all
Before you got your first role, certainly, you didn’t know all about data engineering—accept it!
No doubt, you have worked hard to get to this level in this profession. You may have undergone tutorials, bought courses, seen tons of videos, and read a lot of data engineering articles. You may have even worked on numerous projects. These are great!
However, as much as you have worked, you certainly haven’t had it all—that's how broad data engineering can be.
The fundamental key to success in this field lies in recognizing the existing multitude of tasks. It’s crucial to acknowledge the numerous gaps and maintain a proactive mindset, consistently working to close as many of these gaps as possible.
Be Intentional
During my internship, I collaborated with a team of data analysts. My proficiency in Microsoft Excel set me apart from other interns, granting me the opportunity to work closely with data analysts. Despite initially being confined to tasks within Microsoft Excel, I felt constrained by the limitations. Consequently, I took the initiative to acquire visualization skills and learn SQL. This proactive approach not only expanded my skill set but also enhanced my relevance within the company.
Everyone wants to build a successful career, but not everyone attempts to nurture this desire.
Achieving the growth and success you aspire to requires stepping beyond your comfort zone. I chose to pursue courses at my workplace not out of instruction or compulsion but as a proactive measure to enhance my value.
Being relevant as a data engineer demands that you be intentional about it. Get as many resources as possible, meet fellow data engineers, attend seminars, and learn!
Building a continuous learning habit
Many people are naturally curious and eager to learn something new they come across. For others, it can be challenging. Whichever way, building a continuous learning habit is a process that may take time. One surefire way to develop this habit is by being disciplined and developing a plan to learn essential skills in your day-to-day activities.
Have you considered addressing any existing loopholes? If the reason lies in a lack of the requisite skills, what is preventing you from formulating a plan to acquire them?
Begin by tackling small areas where you can make adjustments to become better, and slowly move on to bigger areas. This way, you’ll enjoy the process and gradually inculcate the habit of learning.
