Inspiration Credit: When designing this collection of images, my inspiration was a deck of cards from ‘La Lotería’. I’m not Latinx, but I’ve long appreciated Latin American cultures. I lived for a year in both Costa Rica and Mexico, and have been studying Spanish off and on for decades (lately getting closer and closer to fluency). The illustrations of this iconic Mexican bingo game have always caught my eye — mainly because they’re beautiful and clever, but also because they’ve helped me learn vocabulary. I love how different artists interpret and style the deck originally popularized in the late 1800s by Don Clemente. It’s a joy to see folks like Mike Alfaro and Cecilia Ruiz modernize and honor ‘La Lotería’.
