How Autism Presents Differently in Women And What To Look Out For
Many people on the internet now wrongly believe that autism is becoming a ‘fashionable’ diagnosis to have and that our generation wants to label everything, but isn’t it funny that when record levels of *women* are being diagnosed with ASD, society believes that autism is being over-diagnosed? Misogyny has successfully gate-keeping the autism diagnosis for predominately white boys for decades, and finally, autistic women are finding the answers to the way their brain is wired and why they are the way they are.
One of the reasons for this is that, in the past, much of the autism research has been based on white boys. So, women have been undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for decades because autism presents differently in women, and even more so for women of colour. Another reason why women like myself are late-diagnosed is that we are better at masking our autistic traits than our male counterparts, which has meant that our autism hasn’t been detectable to others, even if we were struggling behind closed doors.
