At 33 years old, I’m not exactly TikTok’s target audience, yet I find it all too easy to spend hours scrolling through content. If you’ve never set foot into that corner of the internet, you would be forgiven for thinking that it’s simply full of teens doing ‘silly dances’ but if, like me, you’ve spent more hours than you care to admit on the app, then you know there’s much more to it than that.

Just in case you’ve lived in outta space for the last few years, TikTok is a free content creation app for sharing videos between 15 seconds and 3 minutes in length. The option to create 3-minute videos is somewhat new and not utilized by many creators due to most app users' preference for short-form content.

There is a whole wide range of communities working actively on TikTok, so whether you’re part of a large fandom or a small minority, you are almost guaranteed to find your people on there. This is one of the reasons why I finally relented and downloaded the app in the first place — I kept being sent videos from Autistic creators and wanted to see what else was on there. I got into TikTok within a month of getting the professional confirmation that I’m Autistic, so in a weird way it all feels tied together for me.
