The Lake

we splash in the water,
at each others eyes
laughing

we try and think about technique
we might improve our aim
absorbed, clever, cunning

and then — innovation!
water droplets, striking at my eyes
like softly pouncing lions

they strike
accurately, again and again
my laughter roars

i am thinking nothing
only shielding, and rubbing my eyes
in futility

all the meanwhile, i laugh completely.
sweet, long unfelt cries of joy
what pure and most innocent happiness

surges over my heart; oh
how i’d forgotten
i was once a child
