Self-driving car technology has been under the scanner for quite some time now. The concern stems from the fact that there have been some mishaps with self-driving cars in recent times. Even though the incidents have been isolated, it still creates a bit of confusion in the minds of the early adopters. AImotive, a startup from Budapest has risen up to the cause. It uses artificial intelligence to tackle this problem more effectively.

AImotive’s self-driving technology

AImotive’s aiDrive technology has a unique way of enabling L5 self-driving technology in all weather and driving conditions. As a little postface — L5 stands for Level 5 autonomous vehicles, wherein other than the destination and the start of the system, no human intervention is required. AImotive’s recognition engine works on visual learning AI. It processes camera images and sensor data captured in the car and uses it to create segmentation and distance estimation models. This system can identify obstructions on the road and classify them into more than 100 different object classes.

By understanding the type of obstruction, the system can perceive and predict the motion patterns of these objects. This is a very crucial step to the technology because it can be used to calculate the safely navigable space around the said object. Termed “Motion Engine”, it has the ability to recognize emergency situations. Once detected, it can chart out a secondary route plan to ensure the safety of both the driver and the people on the road.

One of the issues with conventional map data is that it two dimensional. AImotive uses its location engine to visualize map data into 3D landmarks, improving navigation accuracy. Moreover, the data ensures self-localization and navigation, while keeping in-car memory requirements low at the same time. This makes it a highly scalable model and can work with any OEM’s default navigation system.

What’s in store for AImotive

AImotive’s aim is to make sure Level 5 autonomous cars become a reality soon. It plans to perfect this across all geographical terrains and environmental conditions. It’s founder Laszlo Kishonti has stressed that AImotive’s technology is designed to apply AI in self-driving cars for it to intelligently adapt to different driving styles, all in real-time.

All said and done, this is an exciting time to be alive. Big corporations have started to see the scope of AI-powered self-driving cars and are trying to adopt the practices. Uber has started working on its fleet of self-driving cars in the US and seems to have great progress. Tesla has collected millions of miles of driver data from its cars over the last few years. It is constantly improving its AI system by making it learn from the recorded driving data.

AImotive is fast on their heels, having raised $10.5 million in funding till date, from two funding rounds. Hopefully, we see L5 car technology available commercially in the near future which is both safe and affordable to use for an average driver.
