Layers
Abstract Art and a poem
Medium — Paul Rueben’s Metallic Oil Pastels
Paper — Sennelier Oil Pastel Pad 6.5 x 9.5 inches
In this piece, I was really just playing around with the paper and seeing how many layers I could put on it with the oil pastels. About three layers before it becomes distorted, it turns out. Just a side note: the blue areas are actually a deep purple, but my camera wouldn’t capture the purple and kept turning it blue. Not sure why that is. I don’t think it had anything to do with the metallic oil pastels because it did the same thing in a previous oil pastel painting. Sucky cellphone camera!
I do like the effects though. As I put down each layer, I reflected on my life and how I tend to have moments of passion, which quickly get overtaken by dark moods. Hence the poem below.
LAYERS
I am multifaceted
layers upon layers —
passion-play overcome
by moods so dark
light forgets to fall
or lingers in corners
like ghosts from the past —
And I often wonder why
my passion burns quickly
then crashes so hard
leaving dense strata
where the ruins of my life
will never see the light of day
