This mosaic is the second in a five-part series of rectangular stone mosaics. I’d created the first of the series more than 10 years ago, and I admit that first piece lacked many of the techniques I’ve learned since. The first was not grouted; I used the direct-technique (where the stones are placed directly into the thinset); and all the tesserae were the same size.

For this piece, I divided the block into two areas with a “stream” of blue stones. The lighter area to the right (antique beige background, Italian royal yellow foreground, Aegean silver between the foreground lines). The darker area was more in keeping with the first rendition — Teos green background, copper yellow foreground, and peacock green between the lines (the latter two colors formed the palette from the first rendition — see below.)

The original concept portrayed how two people present their personal perspective — an inner sanctuary of tightly-held beliefs, surrounded by a slightly more encompassing public one.

For the second piece, I wanted to portray a softening of one’s view point. As a light shines onto our ideas, perhaps some of our more tightly-held convictions mellow; and that softening process is akin to crossing a river.

I plan to add a new design element (or two) to each additional series piece. When finished (I plan to finish before the end of the year), there will be an evolutionary feel to each step, yet all recognizably within the same theme.
