The Seven Kitchen Appliances I Would Want if Stranded on a Desert Island

I wish I was joking

Sometimes I’m my own worst enemy. Two days ago, at the end of a story about the eight television shows I’d want with me if stranded on a desert island, I made a snarky comment at the end:

Unless we start writing about what ten kitchen appliances we’d want while stranded, this prompt is finally done.”

I said it simply because the prompt had started with desert island songs two years ago and somehow refused to die. The reason I’m my own worst enemy is that now I can’t get that final comment out of my head. Every morning when I go into the kitchen, I think “well, obviously I’d take the coffee maker, but what about the microwave?”

If the question stayed in the kitchen, I would only have to deal with it a few times a day, but that hasn’t been the case. While working on a book review last night, I found myself wondering if it was worth taking a blender instead of a stand mixer; I rarely make cakes or bread, after all. Then, while gathering notes for a Thunderdome piece due later this month, I veered far off track, asking myself which appliances Springsteen would take to his island (he probably owns an island now that he’s a billionaire, so this is a serious question for him).
