Good Boy Bob Coffee — Santa Monica
Tucked away off just off Broadway, GBB is a true gem. An oasis of calm in a city buzzing full of rushed human beings.
Ryan and Omar, the two baristas holding down the fort this morning at GoodBoyBob, were gracious enough to answer all of my questions about this new outfit. GBB opened its doors in mid-June of this year, and it has already attained a consistent stream of repeat customers.
Location
The black signs on the sidewalk are easy to miss if you’re breezing past; once you’ve uncovered the path to GBB, you’ll most likely return for the coffee and the laid back atmosphere.
No parking to be found, except street-side, but you can sneak in a motorcycle through the alleyway, and definitely a bicycle. Most of the customers stroll in from the nearby tech/creative offices starting around 8am. Busiest times are 9–11am, followed by a lull in activity. The post-lunch crowd shows up between 1:30 and 3pm.
GBB is open 7am-4pm on weekdays only. They’ll take credit cards and Apple/Android pay, but no cash is accepted.
They have reliable wifi and a handful of loungy seating options. Their modest floor plan is balanced out by their abundant outdoor seating. You’re guaranteed to find a open stool outside, next to their bar-height wooden tables, which are perfectly shaded by large canvas umbrellas.
The Eats
Here you’ll find Sugarbloom baked goods, and each day, a different sandwich option served on Gjusta bread.
The Coffee
Ryan is currently managing GBB and is in charge of selecting the roast profiles. Right now, they are using a chocolatey Ethiopian/Guatemalan house blend, having just switched out from a Guatemalan single-source. Their house blend is also available for sale in 12oz increments.
If you prefer pour-over coffee, then this option is only availble on Fridays. Think of it more as a weekly tasting, given that they only select award-winning coffee.
They carry Clover whole milk, or Almond milk that is made in-house. The almond milk is thickened with dates, and a dash of vanilla and sea salt is added. This kind of marriage can only yield amazing results, so my palate is looking forward to swapping out the steamed milk for the homemade almond milk in the near future.
When at GBB, I usually opt for a cortado, but on this occasion, I wanted to take the edge off the bittersweet chocolate flavor, so I grabbed a latte.
