Is It Worth Writing in 2024?

Depends on your goals

In September 2020, I started writing on Medium. I played around with a personal blog for a year and a half prior before I realize that was a waste of time and money.

I never thought I was a writer. Turns out, I had a lot to say.

Years of repressed thoughts came pouring out, and people actually read what I wrote. Until they didn’t.

What used to be well received became fodder for people to bully me. I was mocked for writing about mental health, and all but run off the platform, mostly by “Christian” writers here.

And Medium did nothing about it.

This site has become so “gatekeepy” that nobody sees my work anymore. I don’t know what they want these days, and I find myself caring less and less. Why put out tons of effort only to fall flat time after time?

It’s hard to jump through invisible hoops.

Even more astounding, writers from here have started promoting Medium on Substack. If you disagree with what they say — YOU are the problem. It’s like some crazy cult!

I’m sick of hearing how great Medium is. Do people really believe that, or are they getting paid to say it?

Writing was my latest creative attempt, following on the heels of photography and graphic design.

I was a miserable failure at all of them, at least career wise. Now, I can say the same for writing.

Do you know how hard it is to pour yourself out year after year and never have anything to show for your work?

Nothing. Not even a living wage?

Yeah, yeah — people will no doubt tell me you can’t make a living wage on Medium. Well, I never expected to, but I did expect to make a reasonable side-hustle income.

You know — like the boost nominators make? The ones who are being paid to promote Medium everywhere?

Of course, they love it here! They are the only ones who make money!

I’m tired. No, I’m exhausted.

I’m tired of people telling me how great it is here. I’m tired of people telling me I don’t deserve to get paid for my work. None of it. Not one damn bit of my creativity.

Why pay an artist when you can just use AI for everything now?

Just remember — there is a person behind every image, paragraph, and note that is generated.

I have literally lived long enough to see myself become useless. Everything I love has been taken over by the robots, and I am so depressed.

Is it worth writing in 2024? It depends.

If you want a glorified online journal to record your thoughts, then go for it. Some people are content with this approach. They don’t understand why the rest of us are unhappy.

If you’re a serious writer, probably not. Anything you create will be appropriated by the machine, and/or unseen by most readers.

You can write for personal pleasure, but don’t dare to think you can make any money “doing what you love.”

That ship has sailed, if it ever existed at all.
