Looks Like Everyone is Leaving

I knew it was coming, but the mass exodus is still shocking

Update: Looks like claps aren’t showing up on my recent articles. Well played, Medium. Well played. Just another nail in the coffin.

I’ve seen many writers I follow announce they are leaving over the past few months.

Some have deleted all their stories, some have just stopped writing. Many (including me) have stopped paying for a membership to protest all the problems Medium refuses to fix.

A few have completely deleted their accounts.

I don’t buy the talk from the powers that be who say Medium is now almost profitable for the first time ever.

If they are, it’s because of the Friend of Medium members who have infused extra capital into the site, hoping to receive better pay in return.

I know all things come to an end, but this is just sad.

People are finally reading the writing on the wall. They are fed up with all the changes, problems, low pay, and daily grinding to get their work seen.

My advice for new writers here?

Quit now, before you get as invested as some of us. Once you do, it will be HARD to leave. Medium is a STRONG addiction.

This place will honestly consume your life, and the return is NOT worth it, despite what some guy with a course has told you.

My Substack is doing very well, and once again, I’m leaning towards deleting my account here.

The atmosphere on Medium is not good. Perhaps it never was. There is so much drama here for one reason or another, and writer morale is awful.

I’ve made some lovely virtual friends here who helped me through a difficult time in my life.

I don’t think I could have gotten through my mother’s illness and death without this outlet. But now it feels like Medium is profiting from my work WAY more than I am, and I don’t like that.

Perhaps it’s time to move on. I have one foot out the door. I’m not sure if I will delete my account or just let it sit here, but I’m leaning towards deleting it.

Thank you to everyone who has read my work over the past 3 1/2 years. I appreciate every single one of you. It was fun while it lasted.

You can find me on Substack.
