Calving Season Has Officially Begun
Welcoming new life to the farm is hard work!
For those new here, we are currently staying on a farm in Eastern Alberta, Canada. We initially stayed here in September last year and made an off-the-cuff comment that we would love to come back and help them out with calving season.
I was dead serious, but they thought we were joking. They figured that we would be well and gone traveling again by now, and there would be no way that we would actually still be here after putting up with a cold Canadian winter.
In actuality, we put up with much of this winter from this exact property as we arrived 2 months ago already — back in January. And, I tell you, I’m so happy that we had two months to get into some semblance of shape with our farm work because I had no idea how exhausting and physical it is to birth cows.
March 19th is the official day that the calves were supposed to start arriving. To control this date, they intentionally put the bulls in with the cows in June, then they left them together for 7 weeks. But of course, like humans, some cows calve early, and some calve late, which creates roughly 6 weeks of a calving season from mid-March to the end of April. For…
