It’s official!

I chose to postpone the AMI update this month, so I could share important news from Google I/O, our annual developer conference. This year’s conference hosted the official launch of Artists + Machine Intelligence Grants, a collaboration between Google Arts & Culture and Google AI.

As the field of art with machine intelligence has matured, we’ve done our best to explore and co-create with the emerging community. As this community grows, we feel it necessary to make our support accessible to practitioners all over the world, through an open call for proposals and an annual cycle of grant-giving and mentorship. By providing technical mentorship, developmental support, and funding through this new grant structure, we hope to see this field broaden to include more practitioners and a greater range of perspectives, technical expertise, and personal experience.

We’re interested in how machine learning can be used in a wide range of art practices: from painting and drawing to film, architecture, design, and performance. Projects like Google Creative Lab’s recent work with Bill T. Jones show the value of bringing new voices into collaboration, and we especially encourage applicants without technical machine learning experience.

Once again, thank you for your attention, and thank you for co-creating with us.

P.S. Below you’ll find photos of works Alex Czetwertynski and I curated for the 2019 I/O Arts program. I also had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with artists Sougwen Chung and Cedric Keifer at I/O, which you can view here.

Artists + Machine Intelligence (AMI) is a program at Google Arts & Culture that invites artists to work with engineers and researchers together in the design of intelligent systems.

Make someone’s day and share this post. ❤
