Finland’s basic income experiment ended last year and the Finnish government is still analysing the findings. This BBC report followed two unemployed people for the two years the test ran. What is striking is how devastated both participants were when their basic income was taken away. For Tanya, basic income meant it was financially worthwhile to take a job in telemarketing. Tuomas did not manage to find work, freelance or otherwise, but he was freed up from the bureaucracy of the benefits system and so could apply for 80 positions over the two years. The findings of this test promise to be important and fascinating when they are eventually published.
