Pop Quiz, Monday with Leanne Pinard Baum

The Pop Quiz, Monday, is a fun little exam that we love to give to savvy business owners. The examination is not a surprise, after all, since the interviewee already knew about the questions in advance. However, we can always pretend and have fun with the scenario of a young entrepreneur sitting in class nervously biting on their pencil. They are ready to take a pop quiz on a chapter that they were supposed to read the night before. Instead, they played Metroid all night on their SNES (Oops, this was me in high school). The real purpose of the pop quiz is that this is a fun way to introduce business tips from real-world experiences that you can not learn in a classroom. We want to thank our entrepreneur for being a good sport and volunteering their time to answer a few questions to help our community grow from their knowledge.

2. Tell us about your business and what you do?

I founded the company Pure Earth Pets Inc., a subscription box for pets with the earth and your dog in mind! We provide curated biodegradable boxes each month filled with environmentally conscience toys and limited ingredient treats. The monthly box comes with the official seal of approval from our rescue dog Dover! Each “Dover-Approved” item is researched to make it easier to find earth-friendly toys and natural treats for your dog to enjoy! 3. Why did you want to become an entrepreneur?

I have always had dreams of being an entrepreneur! When I was younger, I would find ways to be innovative and try to start something new. I remember my first business idea — there were too many lemonade stands on my block, so I started selling ice cream instead! My passions are to make life easier, in this case, with Pure Earth Pets, delivering eco-friendly and natural treats and toys to dog owners while reducing waste in the pet industry!

4. What are the challenging aspects of running a business?

The challenges of starting and running any business are that you wear every hat — social media manager, public relations, customer service, purchaser, designer. You have to be okay with doing it all and be willing to sacrifice to succeed, and all of that run into one is the definition of an entrepreneur.

5. What do you love most about your job?

I started a company focused on dogs and the earth! I love that I am able to help the environment while looking at adorable dogs all day long!

6. How do you have fun at work (team building, pranks, etc..)?

I have fun knowing I am not only helping the environment, but I am helping the animals that live on it as well! I love letting our dog Dover try new treats and toys and seeing how he reacts to everything!

7. What would one piece of advice that you give to a new business owner?

My advice would be — DON’T GIVE UP! Every business has peaks and valleys. Even if you’re currently in that valley, you have to believe that you created something amazing!
