Art Basel is coming back to Hong Kong for the 6th year
For the sixth year, Art Basel is going to light up Hong Kong with an excess of culture and talent at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

34,782 square metres of exhibition space, a whole arena of wonders, featuring amazing modern and contemporary art forms from all over the world. Whilst we might still struggle to truly understand or communicate with those from afar due to a language barrier, a brush stroke speaks more effectively that a dictionary or thesaurus.
Through our eyes, our minds and our hearts, not only will we communicate, we will also try to be drawn back to the mindset of the artists, despite our apparent cultural, geographical and language barriers.
Snapshots from Art Basel 2016
The Typewriter had the pleasure to attend the private viewing session last year and I must say I was deeply impressed with the amount and diversity of talents present.
Whilst Art Basel takes place in Basel (obviously), Miami and Hong Kong, each of them are unique due to its emphasis on showcasing local as well as international artists. So no surprise there will be abundance of galleries featuring art talents from both Hong Kong and the Mainland.
Art Basel events all around Hong Kong
Art Basel is not only contained in the Exhibition Centre. Art is literally everywhere in Hong Kong this week. Walk to either side of the Harbour and look up at the International Commercial Centre in West Kowloon at night. Last year, acclaimed Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima will be putting on a mega artwork display ‘Time Waterfall’ all across the façade of the ICC building.
Many might wonder, as the average ‘artie’ has just thoroughly enjoyed the recently concluded Hong Kong Arts Festival (mostly music, dance and live theatre) and looking forward to the Hong Kong International Film Festival next week, is there even an appetite for more Art in Hong Kong, sandwiched between the two biggest events on the Art x Culture Calendar?
Heck yes, and if you still want to get a ticket, you better hurry, as most tickets will be sold out by tonight. I personally recommend you get the best three-day ticket because there is no way you can go through all the art in one evening.
To all the up-and-coming artists in Hong Kong, The Typewriter will be nesting in the Media Centre from time to time. We’re hoping to start a new segment similar to ‘Humans of New York’, but with a focus on artists. So if you would like to come and share your stories with us, give us a shout!
