마텔리는 1993년 밀워키 미술 디자인 대학(Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design)에서 학사 학위를 받고, 1995년 크랜브룩 미대(Cranbrook Academy of Art)에서 석사 학위를 이수했습니다. 마텔리는 현재 뉴욕에 살며 활동하고 있습니다.
Matelli received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 1993 and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. The artist lives and works in New York City.
마텔리를 유명하게 만들어준 것은 “몽유병 환자”와 그 작품이 전시된 장소입니다. 웰즐리 여자 대학교(Wellesley College) 바깥에 공개적으로 전시된 이 조각품은 언어적으로도 물리적으로도 공격을 받았습니다.
Most of the sculptor’s notoriety has arisen from his work “Sleepwalker” and the placement of the work therein. First publicly installed outside Wellesley College — an all women’s school — the sculpture came under attack both in words and deed.

I love the idea of art escaping the museum and muddling the line between what we expect to be inside (art) and what we expect to be outside (life).
