How to Create a NEAR Wallet
Getting access to the dApps on the NEAR Protocol requires users to connect their NEAR wallets.
Creating a wallet is very easy! Here are a few easy steps to get you started —
Step 1
Go to wallet.near.org and “Create Account”
Click on “Get Started”
Step 2: Choose a Security Method
To protect your account, you’ll have to select an option to secure your NEAR wallet.
Choose from the three security methods mentioned to start your wallet initialisation — Secure Passphrase / Ledger Hardware Wallet / Email
- Option 1: Secure Passphrase
Selecting this option will generate a 12-word passphrase which will act as your password
(NOTE: If you lose this passphrase, you lose access to your wallet!)
Click on “Continue” and enter the word prompt to Verify Phrase
- Option 2: Ledger Hardware Wallet
If you have access to a Ledger Wallet, you could use it to initialise your NEAR account!
Select “Ledger Hardware Wallet” and click “Secure My Account”
Connect your Ledger Nano S/X to your device to continue with your wallet creation and follow the steps on the screen!
(NOTE: Ledger is only supported in the Mozilla Firefox browser, at the time of writing)
Option 3: Email
Users can also secure their accounts with their Email ID.
Type in your ID and click on “Secure My Account”. You shall receive an email with the verification code.
Copy the verification code and input it on the Verification page
Click “Verify and Continue” and follow the steps on the screen
(NOTE: Every time you log in to your NEAR wallet from your Email ID, you will have to use the same verification code)
Step 3: Fund Your NEAR Wallet
Before Jan 2022, initialising a NEAR wallet was free.
Now, it costs 0.1 NEAR (approx ~ $1), to do so.
- Option 1: Fund your NEAR wallet with another existing one by sending at least 0.1 NEAR to your 64-digit Wallet Address
Use the NEAR Protocol network to send 0.1 N.
Enter your 64-digit wallet address and confirm the transaction to receive ~0.04732 NEAR (approx. 0.053 is spent to initialise the wallet)
- Option 3: Add funds through MoonPay
Another option to fund your wallet with NEAR is MoonPay. Though, it’s not preferred if you’re not willing to pay a small number of fees for your transaction.
CONGRATS! You’ve created your NEAR wallet!🏆
Bonus: Custom wallet address
Users looking for a custom wallet address (such as shakira.near), will have to spend another ~0.053 NEAR to do so.
Click on “Add a Custom Address” and type in your preferred wallet name!
Click on “Reserve My Account Id” and follow the same steps as shown above to get your custom wallet address!😊
