Have you fallen asleep at the piano before??

I have, and it hurts! Piano keys embedded in my cheek for the day, fun times.

That’s what learning music notes did to me growing up. I preferred playing by ear and tuning my ears.

If you’re anything like me, the piano is complex and challenging to grasp.

I have a Medeli stage piano/keyboard with 89 keys; that’s a lot! I’ve been playing the piano by ear since I was five years old and passed the gift on to both of my sons.

I use my piano weekly for the videos I post on my YouTube and Instagram. Growing up in the chorus was fun as a child, but understanding musical scales was daunting.

I was struggling to learn musical notes on my piano. I tried about every method you could think of except one.

All but this one that I am about to share below.

Tired of traditional dull scales practice, I decided to try something different.

I am incredibly obsessed with permanent markers, sticky tabs, and stickers. I enjoy labeling many things to help organize our lives.

You can find them on Amazon or your local Walmart, dollar store, or craft store.

I noticed that my piano was the only thing I hadn’t tried the sticky tabs on yet. I got to work, and within 20 minutes, I created this!

Using colorful sticky tabs, I labeled 31 of my note stations in the middle of my piano as the keynotes.

Tips:

  • Aim to attach the sticky tabs to the keys, then write on them being super cautious. It’s best to have an adult do this part to prevent writing on the piano.
  • Be patient and enjoy the process. It took me about 20 minutes to make sure everything was just right. But of course, there were a few problems.
  • I had to rearrange the white key sticky tabs a little higher due to the clicking sound I made when my finger flew past the tabs. Hahaha! In the videos below, the sticky notes are placed lower.

Within a few weeks, remembering what notes we were playing became easy.

How about night practice sessions? Sure!

Light up a blacklight, and you have an unforgettable practice session for the whole family.

Enjoy my YouTube shorts! :D

More tips and tricks:

The videos below are wonderful and so engaging!

I wish I had a music teacher like this growing up. Learning music would have been such fun!

I‘ve checked out thousands of YouTube videos, and my son and I were completely engaged in watching and practicing these lessons.

I always believed that I would always be able to find the notes with no problem, but I was wrong.

My brain is starting to get fuzzy as I get older! Oh no!

It is essential to know the starting pitch of the song so you can always remember the music you are playing.

Seeing these notes written out for my son and me to see on the piano for the first time fills me with joy. My son finds joy in seeing where the notes are. It’s much easier to help us remember.

I hope this helps you today and anyone else who enjoys this beautiful instrument.

It can do anything, and I believe in you!
