Finding inspiration for story ideas can be as easy as having that aha moment when waking up from the most fantastical of dreams. Or there are those tumbleweed times when your mind is … well, tumbleweed. You get the picture. There is no picture.

When you’re struggling to come up with a new idea or interesting premise, why not try spinning an old idea on its head?

What is a Retelling?

A retelling is not telling the same story again, word for word. There would be no point. It’s been done!

A retelling is to weave elements from a classic story, fairy tale, or other piece of literature into a whole new piece of work. While it’s important to keep some of the original story elements they are basically only a springboard. After that, your imagination has the floor.

Most of us love retellings because of the familiar framework in place. We know the story of Cinderella, oppressed by her stepmother and stepsisters. She meets a handsome Prince and…
