Description:

“Unyielding” is a color-changing sculpture that stands out for its fusion of traditional sculptural materials with contemporary techniques. Traditional materials, plaster, and ceramics, form the basic shape of the work. The incorporation of aluminum foil, an electric heating net, a relay, a timing device, and home-formulated thermochromic pigment endows the piece with an unprecedented ability to change colors dynamically.

The color change is achieved through the pigment’s thermochromic effect. It typically requires the sculptor to custom-mix several different thermochromic pigment powders in appropriate proportions and further blend them with suitable liquid binders, diluent, and other necessary additives until a proper coating liquid is formed. The coating liquid is then applied to the sculpture’s surface. The thermochromic pigments in the coat display different colors at different temperature ranges, an effect known as thermochromism.
