My role within the City Modelling Lab is to work with our clients and project teams to understand how ABMs can help solve their problems. The wonderful thing about our simulations is the sheer range of things that they can be used for.

When we created the CML in 2019, it was easier to have introductory discussions with potential clients and collaborators because we would schedule an hour-long meeting, but we had only 20 minutes of pre-prepared material to share.

Today we find ourselves in a different situation. We have more content and examples than ever, so fully exploring everything ABMs have to offer can be challenging, especially in a first meeting.

We now have more experience with the more advanced insights ABMs can uncover around equity, road pricing, and decarbonisation. These are areas of great interest to our clients, but trying to cover them all can sometimes leave little time to thoroughly explore the fundamentals of transport ABMs.

For this reason, I am introducing a new blog series to answer the question:

“What can you do with an Agent Based-Model?”

Each post will focus on one thing you can do with a transport ABM, provide example output, and discuss why we think this is relevant. They’ll be short, bite-size reads to help understand the variety and complexity of insights we can produce from our simulations.

I’ll update this post with a link each time a post is published. All articles are below:
