In this article, I describe the two most important hymns which I listen to every day to understand life, the real meaning of my existence and that contain the actual essence of the Sanathan Dharma.

The real meaning of existence and Maha Vakya (Grand Saying) Doctrine of Vedanta, one of the main schools of the Sanathan Dharma.

Brahman Satya, Jagat Mithya

Brahman (God) is the absolute and only reality, this (physical) world is a falsity.

The above universal truth was realised by the rishis of the Sanathan Dharma more than 10000 years ago and “modern” and technologically “advanced” modern science just realised this in 2022.

Maha Vakya of 10000 year old Advaita Vedanta wins Nobel Prize for Quantum Physics in 2022.

What else can you expect of “modern” science when the most famous rishi today is Rishi Sunak 😂?

Both these hymns were written by Sankara, the ultimate authority of the Sanathan Dharma.

What is very interesting is that Sankara composed the Nirvana Shatakam when he was just 9 and the Bhaja Govindam in his later years just before his death at 32.

The Nirvana Shatakam is an overview of Vedanta in a single song:

Chidananda Rupa, Shivohum, Shivohum.

I am Shiva, I am Sat (Truth) — Chit (Consciousness) — Ananda (Infinite Bliss).

Chindananda is a short form of Sat (Truth) — Chit (Consciousness) — Ananda (Infinite Bliss).

Shiva is one of the highest forms of Brahman (God)

Brahman (God) is the embodiment of Sat (Truth) — Chit (Consciousness) — Ananda (Infinite Bliss).

The Bhaja Govindam is his final understanding:

Bhaja Govindam (praise Govinda) you fool, the rules of grammar will not save you at the time of death.

That everything is useless and only Govinda Brahman (God) is real and should be realised, understood, perceived and praised.

Bhaja Govindam is a detailed explanation of the foolishness of completely forgetting Brahman (God) for the foolishness of pursuing the fallacy of Kama(lust), Krodha (anger), Moha (love and attachment) and Lobha (greed) that can be understood even by an 8 year old child.

Sankara recited this song to criticize and ridicule a very famous scholar who was so proud of his knowledge and grammar that he thought that he was the ultimate being on earth and nothing else mattered other than what he knew and was proud of.

In the times of Sankara, knowledge was more valued than wealth.

To rephrase Bhaja Govindam in modern times:

Bhaja Govindam (praise Govinda) you fool, all your looks, intelligence, status, billions, fancy mansions, super models, super cars and super jets will not save you at the time of death.

Govinda (Lord Krishna) is a form of Brahman (God) as Lord Krishna himself explained in the Bhagavad Gita.

Lord Krishna is an avatar of Narayana or Vishnu.

Gov — inda — means Indriyas or senses controller. That means controller of all senses.

Vish — nu means one who pervades and exists in everything.

Nara — yana means lord and resident of the cosmic waters — cosmic ocean or lord and resident of the entire multiverse.

How do you practice Bhaja Govindam in real life?

Govinda or Brahman (God) exists in everything living and natural, so love, respect and take care of everything living and natural with absolutely no expectations and with समत्वम् Samathvam or equanimity.

Most people only take care of their desires, their family and their house they dont care if the world goes to hell.

It is exactly because of this reason of attachment that they go through the hell of pursuing the fallacy of Kama(lust), Krodha (anger), Moha (love and attachment) and Lobha (greed).

The highest form of prayer or ध्यान Dhyana is just one word:

Sharanam — I surrender.

Sharanam or Sharnagathi means Surrender. Islam also means Surrender. I am sure all religions mean the same thing.

The analogy below was given by Swami Ramakrishna.

Surrender means that one must realise that man is just the carriage, Brahman (God) is the driver.

The car can never move even a millimeter on its own without a driver operating it.

Any form of ध्यान Dhyana can achieve the highest realisation and unity with Brahman just by contemplating this one word Sharanam.

Only mindless parrots repeat and loudly chant the word Sharanam.

The truly intelligent dont have to repeat or chant it, they chant silently to understand its true meaning.

Bhaja Govindam (Praise Govinda)

Govinda (Lord Krishna) is a form of Brahman in the Sanathan Dharma.

Govinda (Lord Krishna) is an avatar of Narayana, who is Parabramha or the absolute reality.

Narayana is present in every living thing and in humans, he resides in the Heart Chakra or Anhata Chakra. The only way to reach the Heart Chakra or Anhata Chakra and find Narayana is through ध्यान Dhyana.

The Narayana Suktam is the highest hymn to Narayana.

Narayana Suktam — the highest hymn to Narayana, the Absolute Reality or Parabrahma
