Our Country’s Good

Hinchley Wood School AS

Welcome to HWS blog for Our Country’s Good (OCG). I will keep this updated on a weekly basis (hopefully) and you guys will also be able to contribute if you want.

There are many different processes for how to rehearse; for us it is to explore the text and to explore practically several elements:

Language

Non-Verbal Communication

Vocal Awareness

Characterisation

Social, cultural, historical and political context

Visual, aural and spatial

Interpretation

Response to practitioner (in our case Stan the Man)

So far we have sat together for a few lessons and read the play and explored the text. We have also started to explore ‘blocking’ the first scene in our search for a shape that tells the story best and have explored character work, creating some improvisations which explore on-stage relationships, and delve into the imaginary life of the character outside of the play.

I feel that our first few lessons on OCG have been creative and thought-provoking with analysis of the text, practical and imaginative ensemble improvisations and even a research and presentation project which gave us all chance to share knowledge of the social and historical context of the play.
