Columbo episode review — 1.4 — Suitable for Framing

Original air date: November 17, 1971
Director: Hy Averback
Writer: Jackson Gillis

Rating: 9/10

“Suitable for Framing” features one of the most interesting plots that I recall from an episode of Columbo. Maybe I’m just a sucker for a good framing plot. And also the murderers in this series being a part of high society. That’s not unique to this episode, of course, but it’s one of the best aspects of the series, and I really appreciate it here.

It works on a couple of levels. First, it’s kind of progressive, not keeping violent crime to the poor and destitute. Secondly, it works because Columbo is sort of the opposite of a gentleman. He dresses poorly, he drives a shitty car, and he’s constantly smoking a cigar.

It’s wonderful. And this episode has a great script and a number of interesting characters.
