Lovecraft Country episode review — 1.5 — Strange Case

Original air date: September 13, 2020
Director: Cheryl Dunye
Writers: Misha Green, Jonathan I. Kidd, and Sonya Winton-Odamtten

Rating: 7/10

If there’s one thing I’d expect out of an HBO drama, it’s some quality sex scenes, and this episode definitely has that — both heterosexual and homosexual. Apparently Montrose is gay.

Most of the story here involves Ruby exploring life as a white woman, who earns a job at the department store. She tries to bond with the one black employee they have, but the only one who takes a liking to her is her boss, who hits on her.

This was the most compelling this show’s been in a bit, but it is so wildly different from the main story. It’s interesting for sure, but is this show trying to be an anthology that also has a full story running through it? Because that seems like a terrible idea. Pick one.

Though I can’t deny that everything with Ruby is pretty good. Everything else just seems like a distraction, but this a fun story.
