Monk episode review — 8.7 — Mr. Monk and the Voodoo Curse
Original air date: September 25, 2009
Director: Andrei Belgrader
Writer: Joe Toplyn
Rating: 8/10
When I first saw this episode, I was convinced it was one of the best. Sure, I hadn’t seen too many Monk episodes at that point, but I love me some Meat Loaf, and this might have my favorite uncomfortably long “it doesn’t have to be perfect” scene of the series when Monk messes around with some voodoo thing for a ritual for Natalie.
So there are a bunch of people being killed off, and they all have had a voodoo doll mailed to them. Of course, Natalie ends up believing in voodoo, which leads to things being pretty awkward when she is also given a doll.
Meat Loaf plays a voodoo priest guy who’s not exactly crazy. He’s just a businessman. And the Loaf is pretty good.
The highight is definitely the last act, when Monk gets Meat Loaf to help out with a cleansing ritual to make Natalie feel better, but she drinks something she’s not supposed to, meaning she has to be rushed to the hospital. As this is happening, Monk figures out what’s going on.
It’s a solid episode, but it’s definitely not one of the best.
