Movie Review: Alien Resurrection (1997)

Alien Resurrection is a bad, bad movie. It’s quite ugly to look at, incredibly dumb in its plot, obnoxious in its characters, and features some truly bad performances.

I wish they could have had a more compelling reason to bring Sigourney Weaver back to this series. Bringing her back as a clone is okay, I guess, but she’s not playing the same Ripley we knew and love, and honestly isn’t given that much to do in the movie, other than that dumb basketball scene.

The alien stuff is old hat at this point. Nothing’s really scary or exciting about the xenomorph, even if there is some pretty good creature design on the new creature thing.

It’s just a shame that the creativity of this movie boils down to a different looking xenomorph. It’s like the bad Terminator sequels, where they just have a different version of the liquid metal Terminator.

And I really can’t say enough about how bad Winona Ryder is here. Most of the performances in this movie aren’t very good, but at least Brad Dourif is fun in his overacting. Ryder just seems like she has no idea what she’s doing.

Rating: 3/10
