Movie Review: All of Me (1984)

All of Me is a pretty great comedy that’s dated incredibly in one unfortunate way. It’s…kind of racist.

Like you need some spiritual nonsense to get this plot to make any sense, so I’m not surprised they ended up going with the whole Hindu reincarnation thing. But couldn’t they at least not get an Italian-American actor?

While that is a legitimate complaint, it doesn’t get in the way of the movie too much. This is an old fashioned screwball kind of comedy that features a powerhouse performance from Steve Martin.

I’ve never thought of Martin as a physical comedian, but holy shit, does he nail all the scenes where Lily Tomlin is controlling half of his body. It’s comedic perfection, and I really do think it’s one of the best performances I’ve seen in a comedy film.

Without him, the movie wouldn’t be that great. But with him — his wonderful slapstick performance and his great chemistry with Lily Tomlin — it’s something special.
