Movie Review: American Gigolo (1980)

American Gigolo is a stylish and compelling drama that loses a lot of its momentum in a fairly weak third act, but still remains entertaining. Richard Gere is wonderful as male escort Julian Kay. He’s smooth and cool, and complicated.

I also really like the score, which heavily utilizes Blondie’s “Call Me,” which was written for the movie. It’s a fantastic song, and it works really well in Giorgio Moroder’s score.

The script by Paul Schrader is also pretty good. It’s no Taxi Driver, but it’s quite good. The movie feels a lot more empty than it probably should, but it’s still worth watching.
