Movie Review: Bitch Slap (2009)

This is what you get when you get a filmmaker not as talented as Quentin Tarantino paying homage to grindhouse movies of the 1970s that nobody remembers.

This movie clearly tries to pay homage to a bygone genre, but with a more modern look, which ironically dates it even worse.

I’m not saying that objectification of women was okay in the ’70s or anything like that, but in the 21st century, it definitely feels backwards. Of course, you could make the argument that a female-led action movie is empowering. But with director Rick Jacobson, who cut his teeth on television with Baywatch, it definitely doesn’t feel that way.

It doesn’t subvert or play off the tropes of exploitation films of the ’70s so much as it just duplicates them.

On top of that, it has this obnoxious visual style. It’s like it’s trying to be Sin City or 300 at times, but it just looks really cheap.
