Movie Review: Bound (1996)

--

The directorial debut of the Wachowskis, Bound is an erotic heist thriller with flavours of neo-noir.

It stars Gina Gershon as Corky, an ex-con who’s just gotten out of prison and gotten a job as a plumber at an apartment building. Jennifer Tilly plays Violet, an unhappy woman married to mobster Caesar (Joe Pantoliano), and she begins a relationship with Corky that eventually moves to a partnership in crime.

Gershon and Tilly are both very, very good. Their chemistry is believable, as is Tilly’s sadness with her husband. They’re the reasons to watch this movie. The sexual chemistry is palpable.

The rest of the movie isn’t all that great, in my opinion, and I think a big part of that is that Pantoliano is so unlikable on screen. Sure, his character isn’t supposed to be likable, but it’s a charisma-free performance.

The movie’s pretty dull when Gershon and Tilly aren’t on screen, to be honest.

Rating: 5/10
