Movie Review: Cat People (1942)
I had definitely seen this film before, but I didn’t remember anything about it. Having seen it a second time, I kind of understand why I don’t remember that much about it, but at the same time, it’s really quite good.
From the title, you might expect this to be schlock, and I certainly would expect a movie with this title coming out about 15 years later to be absolutely awful.
But this is ’40s cinema. We’re talking a great film noir look, and some fantastic and creative cinematography. Even if the story doesn’t grab you (which is my biggest problem with it), you have to appreciate the look.
It’s like the same visual flare as Carol Reed’s The Third Man, but as a cheap and somewhat interesting horror movie. The cinematography and the sound design really elevate this movie. It’s technically really good.
