Movie Review: Deathgasm (2015)

It took me a while to open up to Deathgasm. For one, its pot is centered around heavy metal, which I always find to be irritating. In my eyes, it just tries way too hard to be cool, and that’s sort of what makes it become the opposite.

However, the movie’s metal premise was largely tongue-in-cheek. It doesn’t really ask you to accept that metal is the coolest thing ever, but rather it portrays characters who think this way.

And it really is just a setup, as well. This movie is clearly heavily inspired by the Charles Martin Smith movie Trick or Treat, but it also bears some similarities to Evil Dead II and Demons.

This is quite an enjoyable little horror comedy. It’s incredibly violent, at times disgusting, but always comedic. The movie’s low budget is apparent in some scenes more than others, but the practical gore effects are very well done, and definitely the highlight of the movie.

But the characters and performances are enjoyable, too. Milo Cawthorne is really good as Brodie, the movie’s main character, and Kimberley Crossman kind of steals the show as Medina.

There’s not a whole lot of plot here, but this is one of those movies that you don’t watch for the plot. Watch for the gore, watch for the humor.

Rating: 7/10
