Movie Review: Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
This movie is shockingly mediocre. It’s nothing to be upset about, but I also can’t imagine being excited about it. It’s a decent looking movie. Director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) fills the movie with a decent amount of atmosphere, but unfortunately the script sucks.
The movie is filled with cliches and the only bit of originality it brings to the table — combining an exorcism story with a cop drama — has more potential for comedy than for terror.
The exorcism scene itself is fine. It’s shot well and Derrickson makes the most of some creepy lighting. The premise itself is ridiculous with possession through words painted on the wall of a zoo. Eric Bana (Troy) and Edgar Ramirz (Zero Dark Thirty) give decent performances, but they can’t elevate such a stale script.
