Movie Review: Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

I don’t know what it is about comedians, but at a certain point, they seem to make nothing but shit. It’s the story of Robin Williams, of Dan Aykroyd, and perhaps most notably, Eddie Murphy.

I really, really hope this changes that, because back in the day, Murphy was one of the best. And holy shit, is this the role of a lifetime. Rudy Ray Moore was such a fascinating entertainer, and Dolemite such an interesting personality, and Murphy embraces all the eccentricities.

It’s a fantastic role for him. He’s funny, and he works well in some dramatic moments as well. It’s a great performance.

The movie is quite entertaining, on the backs of Eddie Murphy and a superb supporting cast including Chris Rock, Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Wesley Snipes, Bob Odenkirk, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. It’s a feel-good movie, and a solid biopic.

Rating: 7/10
