Movie Review: Don’t Breathe (2016)

Don’t Breathe was a sleeper hit in the late summer of 2016, grabbing the number one spot for two weekends in a row. It’s kind of amazing this movie did that well, because you wouldn’t really expect it to be a mainstream success. It’s a very trashy movie and feels like a throwback to the 1970s.

Not only was it successful, but it was critically acclaimed. It now stands at 88% on RottenTomatoes. It’s also quite good.

The movie is directed very skillfully by Fede Alvarez, using no false jump scares and instead building tension. The movie has some twists that change where your sympathies lie, and remains very unpredictable.

I do think the movie loses a little bit of steam at the end, but the movie definitely has plenty of scares throughout. It does a good job in building character, as well, when it has the chance to. The character motivations are believable and well handled, and carried far more weight than I would have expected.

Rating: 7/10
