Movie Review: Emmanuelle (1974)

I’m kind of fascinated by this whole Emmanuelle thing. Emmanuelle became such a popular character that she got her own series of films, as well as several knockoff series from all around the world. It’s strange.

Especially considering there’s not a whole lot to her character, or to the story. If you want to make a sexploitation movie, just go out and make it. You don’t need to rip off another movie.

But this is the original, starring Sylvia Kristel.

This movie really proceeds exactly as you’d expect. There’s nothing all that interesting. I suppose a young woman’s erotic awakening could be interesting if we had some emotional investment with her character, but she’s pretty clearly a vessel for erotica.

Also, is the director’s name a joke? I mean, I don’t know how you pronounce it, since he’s Dutch, but it definitely looks like “Just Jackin’.”
